Johnnie Bayfield Talk 21/11/19

Johnnie Bayfield Talk

At the end of November, we had screenwriter Johnnie Bayfield come into our college to give us a talk about screenwriting and performance in TV and film.

During this talk, we learnt about his history as an actor for television - appearing on BBC 1 and BBC 3 and how he is now a writer and journalist, contributing regulatory to BBC Radio Four as well as in print for Shortlist and a music editor for The Idler. It was an entertaining talk with the screenwriter,as he gave us his experience of the creative field as well as telling us the reality of the business in terms of screenwriting and performance. For theatre students and potential acting school students, Bayfield shared his history in acting school and he gave his honest views and advice to help them decide whether acting school would be suitable for them or not - talking about what acting school consisted of, finding an agent to help actors find work, how an acting agent works and even how to try to find acting work in the creative area.

Nearer the end of the talk, Bayfield spoke to us as a class about our in-development short film. We conversed with him for a while, exchanging thoughts and discussions about the short film and he gave us some considerable ideas and suggestions for when creating our own individual projects similar to this as well as the current project that we have been working on. One of his pieces of advice was finding a common likeness in an idea or a series of ideas to help form the consensus as part of the beginning of creating a short film; a particular suggestion of which we all strongly agreed would be something that would be considered when we delved further into the base idea(s) for our short film production.
